Pond construction August 2002
Here my husband is "mudding" the sharp shale rocks. The stream isn't developed yet.
Here we're all helping to spread out the liner. Note the pile of dirt to the right. You wouldn't believe how much dirt can come out of that hole!
This shows the pond fully covered with rocks. The black material under the liner is the underlayment. The stream hasn't yet been designed in this picture.
This shows the beginnings of the stream. This has all been built up using the dirt and rocks we got out of the pond hole. We bought a tamper and tamped it down. The black thing at the top is the BioFalls.
The stream liner is being put down. It overlaps the pond
This is the broad part of the stream with the little rocky berm. Note the middle waterfalls. The jagged rock turns and twists the water in an interesting way. The small patch of dirt you see at the bottom of the photo will be dug out next year, lined with the liner scraps and will become a bog.
Here's one view of our pond, stream, and waterfall. Can you see our little fish toward the bottom of the pond? Also note the bark mulch paths instead of grass. There's a fairly large sitting area toward the back of the yard, so even though there's absolutely no grass in the backyard, there's plenty of room for us - and no mowing! The photo doesn't really do the pond justice. You really have to be there in person and hear the water to get the full experience.
