Energy
Energy in the backyard? The clothesline is an important part of my backyard habitat. (I also hang my clothes indoors in the winter using the Laundrulux. Besides drying the clothes, it also helps humidify the air.) The clothes dryer is the second-biggest electricity-using home appliance after the refrigerator. By washing in cold water and drying on the line, you can save a significant amount of energy a year and prevent the emission of carbon dioxide.
In addition, the less lawn you have, the less you'll be using that power mower. Lawn equipment is very inefficient and produces a lot of pollution.
Speaking of pollution, we bought our hybrid Prius in Dec 2002. It's part of our backyard habitat in a sense because preventing global warming is the best way to protect our habitat. In September 2003, the second generation hybrids will be available. They're bigger, more powerful, get even better gas mileage, and pollute even less! They're PZE (partially zero emissions) vehicles as opposed to our car which is a SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle), which means that apart from using less gas, we're also producing only about one-tenth the harmful emissions of a comparable car - which also means we're creating fewer health problems like asthma
The National Wildlife Federation has developed a guide and some fact sheets concerned your landscaping and global warming.
